Hybrid molecular-continuum methods for micro- and nanoscale liquid flows

چکیده
Many flows at microscale and below are characterised by an inherent multiscale nature and accurate numerical modelling of the phenomena involved is the cornerstone for enhancing the applicability of micro and nanofluidics in the industrial environment. This paper presents a hybrid molecular-continuum strategy named as point wise coupling for studying complex microand nanoscale flows. In this strategy one performs continuum simulations and uses a molecular solver for computing flow properties. The hybrid methodology utilises a numerical procedure to minimise the cost of the computationally expensive molecular solver. Simulations have been carried out for a slip Poiseuille flow test case. The hybrid results are in good agreement with analytical solutions and pervious molecular simulations.

Multi-scale modelling and hybrid atomistic-continuum simulation of non-isothermal flows in microchannels
A hybrid atomistic-continuum method devoted to the study of multi-scale problems is presented. The simulation domain is decomposed into three regions: the bulk where the continuous Navier-Stokes and energy equations are solved, the neighbourhood of the wall simulated by the Molecular Dynamics and the overlap region which connects the macroscopic variables (velocity and temperature) between the ...
متن کاملFluctuations and continuity in particle-continuum hybrid simulations of unsteady flows based on flux-exchange
– This letter describes the treatment of unsteady liquid flow by a hybrid particlecontinuum scheme. The scheme couples a particle region described by molecular dynamics with a coarse-grained domain solved by continuum fluid dynamics. The particle and continuum domains overlap in the coupling region, where two-way transfer of momentum flux is established. We demonstrate that this flux-coupling s...
متن کاملConcurrent triple-scale simulation of molecular liquids.
We present a triple-scale simulation of a molecular liquid, in which the atomistic, coarse-grained, and continuum descriptions of the liquid are concurrently coupled. The presented multiscale approach, which covers the length scales ranging from the micro- to macroscale, is a combination of two dual-scale models: a particle-based adaptive resolution scheme (AdResS), which couples the atomic and...

متن کاملA Lattice - Based Cellular Automata Modeling Approach for Granular Flow Lubrication
Liquid lubricants break down at extreme temperatures and promote stiction in micro-/ nanoscale environments. Consequently, using flows of solid granular particles as a “dry” lubrication mechanism in sliding contacts was proposed because of their ability to carry loads and accommodate surface velocities. Granular flows are highly complex flows that in many ways act similar to fluids, yet are dif...
